The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG to Date

The buzz around the recent awards show was significant, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling image of a strange statue. The secret has now been solved. Larian Studios is working on a fresh Divinity game.

Announced as Divinity, the game was debuted with a daring trailer packed with intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

For those expecting Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

Nevertheless, the developer described this new Divinity as a continuation of the main series. This choice of words hints that the team is likely building a real-time experience as opposed to another turn-based title. At this moment, we can only guess, as only a teaser video is available.

A Pillar of Modern RPGs

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it kicked off the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for intricate stories, branching plots, and deep class systems—elements that recently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its world is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs that are viable by choosing a distinct build with a specific history of choices.

The series is also wonderfully open-ended, letting players to improvise both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be approached in multiple ways, frequently in lateral fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

A New Chapter Begins

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, fans can get ready for more where that came from in this groundbreaking franchise.
